About me

Maggie Baumann, LMFT, CEDS is a licensed Marriage, Family Therapist specializing in teen, individual and family psychotherapy. She maintains a private practice in Newport Beach, California, near Fashion Island.  She is a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS), credentialed by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) as well as a Certified EMDR Trauma Therapist, credentialed by EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).  From 2008 to 2013, Maggie served as a board chair for the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP), Orange County Chapter, promoting eating disorder awareness and prevention locally through the organization. Today she volunteers in a different capacity, and is a committee member on the National IAEDP's CEDS Certification Committee.

As a certified EMDR Trauma Therapist, Maggie treats clients with trauma-related issues from PTSD, sexual/physical/verbal abuse, eating disorders, addictions, early childhood neglect, grief/loss, depression, anxiety and other mental health issues that keep clients stuck with triggering mind/body memories.

Maggie has conducted therapy groups in the community on women's issues, eating disorders and body image. She has also presented eating disorder workshops for graduate students pursuing their masters in counseling psychology. She worked several years as an eating disorder/addictions therapist at a residential eating disorders/addiction treatment center in Newport Beach prior to going into private practice. With a special interest in treating teen and adult adoptees, Maggie is a former consultant for a Newport Beach addictions treatment center facilitating an adult adoptees process group. Additionally, she is certified as a domestic violence counselor.
Maggie has traveled all over the country to promote eating disorder prevention as well as pregorexia (eating disorders during pregnancy) and has appeared on numerous television programs and published in media outlets including CNN online and the New York Times addressing eating disorder recovery. This past year she was a featured guest speaker, with some of the leading eating disorder specialists in the country, on a HuffPost Live segment dedicated to eating disorders during pregnancy.  She is currently writing a chapter in a book on eating disorders in special populations, and was invited to co-author the chapter on "Eating Disorders in Pregnancy." The book is scheduled to publish in 2017.
In March of 2014, Maggie co-founded, in partnership with Chicago-based Timberline Knolls Treatment Center, the first web-based support group for pregnant women and moms with eating disorders called, "Lift the Shame." Today this free support group holds a membership of more than 100 women across the country and abroad. If you are interested in learning more about "Lift the Shame," visit Timberline Knolls' link to "Lift the Shame."

She is a professional writer and has been a featured mental health freelance writer for two years on the very successful website dedicated to moms called She wrote on topics ranging from eating disorders, self harm, sexuality and mindfulness to body image and improving marital relationships.

As a therapist, she holds great compassion and respect for her clients' abilities to work through difficulties in order to find the strength to make positive changes in their lives. She says, "Healing and growth come from a commitment to changing what's not working."

Maggie is a graduate of University California at San Diego (UCSD) with a bachelor's in psychology/biology. She graduated summa cum laude with her master's degree in counseling psychology from Argosy University.
